Nicola Portman defied the odds to win the ladies individual title at Castleford and District Crown Green Bowling Association’s annual festival at Pontefract Bowling Club.
The eight finalists included red-hot favourite Maureen Chambers and county players Amanda Hagen and Lyn Dye.
But Portman - daughter of highly experienced bowlers Steve and Karen Portman - upset the formbook to lift the title, beating Chambers in the final.
In her first match, Portman defeated Hagen 21-17 and then overcame the vastly experienced Pat Walton 21-15.
The final produced a thrilling match.
Trailing 15-14, Portman won the jack and then played superbly to emerge the winner 21-15.
Her father Steve won the gents pair title playing with Ryan Lloyd. They beat Jake Durham and Danny Revell 21-18 in the final.
Ryan Lloyd’s father Robert won the gents individual championship.
Christine Sutcliffe (Methley) and Nicole Farrar (Garforth Rec) lifted the ladies pairs title.
Maureen Chambers and regular playing partner Stuart Thompson won the festival’s final event, the mixed pairs.
Association president and festival organiser Dennis Metcalfe was disappointed with the attendances at the two-day festival but he added: “The bowling was of a very high standard and the matches were played in the true spirit of the game.
“The losers were those who didn’t bother to turn up.”
Organisers thanked Pontefract Bowling Club for use of their excellent facilities, ladies for first-class catering arrangements, gents for all their hard preparation work, bar staff, members, players and committee, the greenkeeper and main festival sponsors McTigue’s Funeral Directors.
