A new cycling club, Knottingley Velo, gained its first podium place in the Seacroft road race at Wistow.
Knottingley Velo’s Jonny Willkinson rode a near perfect race and looked set to achieve the club’s first win but was just pipped on the line by Chris Daddy of Squadra RT racing team.
Knottingley Velo had five riders in the 60 strong race and all finished in the main bunch.
The race was 61 miles with a speed average of 26 miles hour.
After a few breaks from the main bunch, a group of six riders got away on a good gap including Knottingley Velo’s Chay Curtain.
It was a fast pace and Chay wasn’t able to stay in contact and eventually dropped back in the main bunch.
Wilkinson went with two other experienced riders and managed to bridge the over a minute gap to the remaining breakaway riders.
With eight riders in the group all working together then it was going to be hard for the bunch to catch.
It was a 300 metre sprint to the finish line with Wilkinson looking like he had it in the bag but the experienced Squadra rider came up trumps and pipped him on the line.
It was a great race, with many of Knottingley Velo members and families out to support the riders.
The club has been running just eight weeks and has in excess of 75 members of all abilities.
There are more details about the club on Facebook and twitter.
