Pontefract athlete Howes in outstanding form

Pontefract Athletics Club finished second out of the four clubs in Division One in last Sunday’s Yorkshire and District Athletics League match at Cudworth.

The match result was first Barnsley AC (248 points) second Pontefract AC (222) third Longwood Harriers (220) and fourth Holmfirth Harriers (146).

Pontefract’s Cameron Howes was in outstanding form. He set a club record of 1.46 metres when winning the under 13 boys high jump, which is an AAA of England grade one standard.

Cameron also won the 75 metres hurdles in 13.7 seconds and he was second in the long jump with 4.12 metres.

Callum Brain won the under 17 men’s shot putt, setting a club record of 11.20 metres. He also won the discus with a throw of 26.94 metres.

Tadhg Parker-Walker won the under 15 boys 1,500 metres in five minutes 0.8 seconds and he was third in the 300 metres, setting a club record of 43.7 seconds.

Maria Schofield made it four club records on the day when she won the under 15 girls hammer with 32.69 metres. She also won the shot putt with 8.23 metres.

Other event winners for the Pontefract Club were:

Jasmine Bate (under 13 girls high jump - 1.33 metres and 70 metres hurdles - 13.9 seconds), Abigail Clegg (under 13 girls 1200 metres - four minutes 35.2 seconds), Cara Middleton (under 15 girls discus – 17.69 metres), Faye Burnley (under 15 girls javelin - 13.32 metres and 75 metres hurdles - 16.5 seconds), Emily Carter (under 17 ladies hammer - 14.30 metres), Edward Plimmer (under 13 boys shot putt - 5.44 metres), Max Stark (under 15 boys javelin - 14.33 metres) and Robert Bate (under 15 boys shot putt – 6.06 metres).

The previoius week in the York Summer League meeting, Isabelle Stones dead heated for first place in the under 11 girls 75 metres, setting club records for under 11 and under 13 girls with a time of 10.8 seconds.

Isabelle also finished second in the long jump with 3.90 metres and second in the shot putt with 6.99 metres with the lighter 2Kg weight. Emily Plimmer finished second in the under 11 girls 600 metres with a personal best of one minute 56.0 seconds.

Cameron Howes recorded three victories in the under 13 boys age group with 1.40 metres in the high jump, 4.35 metres in the long jump and 13.8 seconds in the 75 metres hurdles.

Sophie Gilbert won the under 20 ladies long jump with 3.59 metres and Will Carter won the under 20 men’s 110 metres hurdles in 20.1 seconds.
