Pontefract Athletics Club’s Maria Schofield (pictured) won the gold medal in the under 13 girls shot putt with a throw of 7.90 metres at the Yorkshire Track and Field Championships at Cudworth.
It was a personal best performance by the young athlete and she became the first athlete from the Pontefract club to win a title at these championships since the club was formed in March, 2010.
She had four throws in advance of anything produced by any of her competitors and her performance was an England Athletics grade two standard and a new club record.
Maria also finished seventh in the final of the long jump with 3.76 metres.
Maria’s older brother, Lewis, won the bronze medal in the under 15 boys 80 metres hurdles in 14.65 seconds and he also won the bronze medal in the javelin with a throw of 24.19 metres.
Lewis also finished fifth in the shot putt with 8.36 metres and he also recorded personal bests in the long jump with 4.69 metres and in the discus with 21.05 metres.
Callum Brain recorded 21.62 metres in the same discus event.
Will Carter finished fifth in the under 17 men’s discus with 26.99 metres, sixth in the shot putt with 9.12 metres and seventh in the javelin with 29.95 metres.
He also clocked 12.85 seconds in the 100 metres and he recorded 5.12 metres in the long jump.
Amy Brain finished sixth in the final of the under 13 girls long jump with 3.87 metres and seventh in the final of the 800 metres in two minutes 41.34 seconds.
Cameron Howes finished eighth in the final of the under 13 boys 100 metres in 14.46 seconds after clocking 14.34 in his qualifying heat. He also recorded a personal best of 3.98 metres in the long jump.
Sophie Gilbert recorded personal bests in the under 17 ladies 100 metres and 300 metres with 14.03 seconds and 48.81 seconds.
In the West Yorkshire Track and Field League meeting at Cleckheaton, Isabelle Stones won the under 11 girls long jump with 3.43 metres. Abigail Clegg finished second in the under 11 girls 600 metres, setting a club record of two minutes, 00.44 seconds.
In the under 15 boys shot putt, Callum Brain finished second with 9.38 metres, Kye Evans was fourth with 8.26 metres and Lewis Schofield was sixth with 7.85 metres.
In the under 17 men’s high jump, Will Carter recorded 1.50 metres.
Some of the Pontefract athletes also competed in the Cleethorpes Track and Field Open Meeting.
Maria Schofield was again in superb form, winning the under 13 girls shot putt and making a significant improvement to the club record, which she had set one day earlier in the Yorkshire Championships with a throw of 8.30 metres.
Maria also won the high jump event with a personal best of 1.30 metres and she was fourth in the 70 metres hurdles in 14.4 seconds.
Will Carter won the under 17 men’s discus with 26.11 metres and he also won the shot putt with a personal best of 9.15 metres.
