Sam Schofield got Pontefract Athletics Club off to a winning start in Sunday’s Wakefield Open Meeting when he won the under 11 boys long jump with 3.43 metres.

It was the first of 10 event victories at the meeting by athletes from the Pontefract club with Sam providing a second victory in the shot putt with 5.66 metres.

He was also third in the 80 metres in 12.7 seconds.

His sister Maria set a club record when finishing second in the under 15 girls shot putt with 9.62 metres.

As there was no hammer competition in the under 15 girls age group, Maria stepped up one age group and finished fifth in the under 17 ladies hammer with 38.70 metres.

Gale force winds and rain provided the athletes with some very difficult conditions, but in her first competition in club athletics, Sophie Fairhurst won the under 13 girls high jump with 1.11 metres.

This was just before the wind lifted the high jump landing bed from its position on the half moon and deposited it about 30 metres away in the middle of the track

This resulted in the remaining high jump competitions being held indoors and the pole vault being cancelled at a stage when Will Carter had cleared 2.60 metres very easily in the under 20 men’s event, but was not allowed to continue because of the dangerous conditions.

Rebecca Bell won the under 13 girls shot putt with 6.61 metres.

Isabelle Stones also threw 6.61 metres, but Rebecca was judged to be the winner by virtue of a better second throw.

Isabelle also finished second in the 100 metres in 14.6 seconds.

Cameron Howes finished first in the under 15 boys high jump with a clearance of 1.50 metres.

Cameron also won the 80 metres hurdles in 14.5 seconds with Jack Kinnear 2nd in 19.7 seconds. Jack also finished second in the long jump with 3.90 metres.

Will Redmond won the under 20 men’s long jump with 5.62 metres and Will Carter was second in that event with 5.38 metres.

Richard Howes won the senior men’s long jump with 4.72 metres and he also won the javelin with 32.64 metres.

Niamh Atkinson came third in the under 11 girls 600 metres in two minutes, 10 seconds and Emily Plimmer finished third in the under 13 girls 800 metres in two minutes, 43.7 seconds.

Logan Askham came third in the under 11 boys shot putt with 4.53 metres with Jack Mattison taking third place in the under 13 boys 100 metres in 14.4 seconds and third place in the long jump with 3.76 metres.

As there was no hurdles event for under 13 girls at the Wakefield meeting, Jasmine Bate opted to compete in the Hull Open Meeting.

Jasmine finished second in that event, setting a Pontefract club record of 12.5 seconds. Jasmine also came first in the high jump with 1.30 metres and second in the shot putt with 6.50 metres.

Faye Lightowler won the women’s race in Saturday’s Pontefract Park Run with a time of 19 minutes 49 seconds.

Angela Hannon finished fourth in the women’s race at last Sunday’s Ackworth Half Marathon in one hour, 32 minutes, five seconds.
