PONTEFRACT and District Golf Club have been crowned Yorkshire inter club champions for the first time since 1984.
They lifted the trophy when Darren Walton and Simon Coumbe beat an Ilkley team 4 and 3 over 36 holes in the final at Moortown Golf Club, Leeds.
Pontefract and Ilkley qualified for the final from an initial entry of 62 clubs.
Both teams played tremendous golf despite the poor weather.
After a slow start, Pontefract went two up at the 17th hole but then lost the next hole and were only one hole up at half way. They dominated the second-half of the match, eventually winning on the 32nd hole.
Pontefract’s Andy Wiltshire played in all previous rounds of the competition but missed the final after he sustained a back injury.
It was the fifth time Pontefract have won the competition. They were also victorious in 1984, 1972, 1953 and 1949.
Although Walton is a relative newcomer at the club, both Wiltshire and Coumbe have come through the ranks from being juniors. They have been tremendous ambassadors for the club over the years they have played representative golf.
Pontefract will welcome new members at all levels of golf. Anyone interested should contact the club on 01977-792241 or e-mail email@example.com.
