Pontefract RUFC first-team battled magnificently to pull off an important 15-13 win at North Ribblesdale in Yorkshire One on Saturday.

Joe Perkins was Pontefract’s man of the match for his relentless tackling stint.

Andy Fradgley and Guy Pickets were stand-out forwards.

Craig Fawcett, Glen Boyd and Andy Dean scored vital points in a tight game and Richard Dedicoat had his best game in a Pontefract shirt.

Ben Dunn-Birch was also in excellent form.

Both sides had to contend with heavy conditions and defensive play was a key element of the game.

Pontefract were the first to score from a perfectly weighted kick from fly half Fawcett. Centre Boyd collected the ball to score at the corner.

North Ribblesdale raised their game to stay in contention and edged ahead with two penalty goals after Pontefract has spent a long spell defending.

As the first half came to a close Pontefract’s effort was stifled and the home side were penalised in front of the posts, Andy Dean goaled to put the visitors 8-6 up at the break.

Pontefract made an excellent start to the second half when, from a charged down kick, Fawcett hacked through and scooped up the ball to score the try which Dean goaled.

Pontefract defended well in the final phases of the game.

North Ribblesdale eventually got a converted try to cut the gap to two points but Pontefract held their nerve to retain their narrow advantage.
