Pontefract lead way in track and field league

After the fourth of six fixtures in the West Yorkshire Track and Field League, Pontefract Athletics Club are leading the eight clubs in Division One with 215 points.

The club is doing extremely well to be ahead of long established clubs such as Bingley Harriers, who are second with 202 points, and Holmfirth Harriers, who are third with 152 points.

In last Wednesday’s fixture at Wakefield, Maria Schofield won the under 13 girls discus, setting a club record and achieving an England Athletics grade two standard with 20.32 metres.

Will Carter finished second in the under 17 men’s discus, setting a club record of 28.81 metres.

Isabelle Stones made it three club records on the when she finished a very close third in the under 11 girls 75 metres in 11.55 seconds.

Isabelle was also second in the shot putt with 4.14 metres.

Kye Evans was marginally outside the club record in the under 15 boys 200 metres, finishing third in a fast 25.34 seconds.

Kye was also second in the long jump with 4.64 metres, just ahead of Lewis Schofield, who jumped 4.56 metres.

Cara Middleton finished third in the under 13 girls discus with 14.37 metres and Sophie Gilbert ran well to finish third in the under 17 ladies 200 metres in 29.36 seconds.

In last weekend’s Pontefract Park Run, David Kidd finished ninth out of 205 runners, clocking 19 minutes nine seconds for the 5K distance.

Michael Flaherty was 13th in 19-39.
