Pontefract’s Rachel Grayson and her sailing partner Sam Waller triumphed in the Beaver Sailing Club Junior/Youth Regatta 2014.
A total of 43 junior and youth sailors took to the water at Beaver Sailing Club, a record number since the event was created several years ago.
This year the same racing format was kept with three fleet races throughout the day and two beginner Oppy races in between. Several different classes of boat took part, including; Mirror dinghies, Toppers, Optimists and Teras in the junior section and the same plus Picos, RS200 and Lasers in the youth fleet.
As predicted the wind built during the day making the sailing conditions brilliant for the competitors.
Competitive racing throughout the day meant the results towards the top of the fleet came down to the last race sailed.
In the youth section Pontefract girl “Reg” Grayson and her partner Waller, sailing an RS200, took the honours and in the Oppy race Nathan Marson won. In the junior section George Stainforth, from Doncaster, sailing a Mirror dinghy, came first.
Beaver Sailing Club is near to Snaith at Southfield Reservoir. It has a vibrant junior and youth section who train on Saturdays between 10am and 2pm. For £10, a boat is loaned with first class instruction from fully qualified Royal Yachting Association coaches. The club has thanked Sponsors Parkhurst Opticians.
