LEWIS Schofield of Pontefract Athletics Club was in excellent form in Saturday’s sixth and final West Yorkshire Track and Field League meeting of the season at Wakefield.

In the under 13 boys high jump, Lewis produced an England Athletics grade one performance to finish a close second with a clearance of 1.45 metres.

This improved his personal best by a massive 10 centimetres and he is the first athlete from the Pontefract club to achieve a grade one performance since the club was formed in March, 2010.

It was Lewis’s fourth club record of the year, adding to the 800 metres, discus and long jump records, which he already holds.

Lewis was also in excellent form in the long jump, in which he finished third with a personal best of 4.34 metres to add 18 centimetres to his club record in that event.

He also finished fifth in the 800 metres in two minutes 36.55 seconds.

Maria Schofield, younger sister of Lewis, made it a day to remember for the Schofield family by clinching the bronze medal for finishing third in the individual points table for under 11 girls with a total of 39 points for the season.

In Saturday’s competition Maria picked up five points for finishing second in the shot putt with a personal best of 5.35 metres.

She secured a further three points with fourth place in the 600 metres in two minutes 06.12 seconds. Maria is the first athlete from the Pontefract club to win a medal for finishing in the first three in the West Yorkshire Track and Field League.

William Carter finished third in the under 15 boys 80 metres hurdles in 17.15 seconds and fifth in the shot putt with six metres.
