Scott wins athlete of year award

Scott Daly was a multiple awards winner at Pontefract Athletics Club’s presentation night at Pontefract Rugby Union Club on Friday.

Scott won the Cyril Jones Athlete of the Year Trophy, which is presented each year to the person who is considered to be the club’s best all round athlete across the three disciplines of road running, cross country running and track and field.

In 2013 he set six club records on the roads in the men’s over 40 age group at distances of 5K,five miles, 10 miles, half marathon, 20 miles and marathon.

His 20 miles time was also a club record for senior men. He also competed well in cross country and he won the javelin event at the club’s track and field championships.

Scott also collected awards for being the men’s grand prix winner, road running rankings runner up, men’s marathon runner of the year and men’s 5K series winner in Pontefract Park.

Christine McCarthy collected awards as the ladies grand prix winner, road running ranking winner and ladies marathon runner of the year.

The road running rankings awards are made by using the world masters athletics age grading calculations, which allow you to calculate a runner’s performances for various distances as a percentage of the world record for somebody of the same age and gender.

Christine’s performances over the 10K, 10 miles and half marathon distances averaged 85.25 per cent of the world record, which is just over half way between national standard and world class.

Kye Evans was the male junior track and field athlete of the year.

Kye won the gold medal in the under 15 boys 200 metres in the West Yorkshire Track and Field Championships and he also won the silver medal in those championships.

During the year, he set five club records at 50 metres indoors, 50 metres hurdles indoors, 100 metres, 200 metres and long jump.

Maria Schofield was the female junior track and field athlete of the year for the fourth year running.

Maria won the gold medal in the under 13 girls shot putt in the West Yorkshire Track and Field Championships and she also won the gold medal in the shot putt in the Yorkshire Championships.

During the year, she set five club records at 60 metres hurdles indoors, 70 metres hurdles, javelin, discus and shot putt.

In the shot putt event, she achieved a distance of 9.04 metres, which is an AAA of England grade one standard and placed her 23rd in the UK rankings for that event.

Faye Banks was the ladies winner of the 5K series of races in Pontefract Park and Faye also won the award as ladies cross country runner of the year after finishing fourth overall in the senior ladies age group in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League, the highest positioned ever by a member of the Pontefract Club.

Emily Plimmer was the female junior cross country runner of the year.

Emily finished sixth overall in the under 11 girls age group in the West Yorkshire Cross Country League and her fifth position in one of the races equalled the best ever finishing position by an athlete from the Pontefract club.

Will Carter was the male junior cross country runner of the year.

The overall winners of the club’s series of three track and field competitions at the Kings School were - Under 11 boys: Max Godridge. Under 11 girls: Isabelle Stones. Under 13 boys: Cameron Howes. Under 13 girls: Maria Schofield. Under 15 boys: Will Godridge. Under 15 girls: Emily Plimmer. Under 17 men: Will Carter. Under 17 ladies: Sophie Gilbert.

Awards for winning an event at the club’s track and field championships at Thornes Park Stadium went to Isabelle Stones, Abigail Clegg, Logan Taylor, George Clegg, Maria Schofield, Amy Brain, Cameron Howes, William Tucker, Emily Carter, Lewis Schofield, Kye Evans, Callum Brain, Sophie Gilbert, Hannah Lane, Will Redmond, Will Carter, David Kidd and Scott Daly.
