Veteran Marcus Hookham helped Knottingley C beat C Station A 7-3 in Castleford, Pontefract and District Table Tennis League.

Because of the absence of two key players, Knottingley’s three-man team comprised 84-year-old team captain Marcus Hookham, B team substitute Alan Yip and regular Robert McNaught.

They took on C Station’s three generations of the Lumb family in grandad Keith, his son Richard and grandson Marc.

Alan won all of his games, each over three sets.

The league’s elder statsman Marcus showed considerable guile and stamina to beat Richard over five gruelling sets.

Marcus lost over four sets to Keith but he beat Marc convincingly over three sets.

Robert beat Marc over four sets, lost to Richard over three sets, albeit closely, and Keith over three close sets, losing by the minimum score in each.

Robert and Alan won the doubles.

YMCA B came out on top 7-3 against YMCA C.

YMCA B captain John Keegand and Chris Inman both won all their three matches.

John beat Paul Morris, Paul Dykes and Nigel Brook over three sets.

Chris beat Paul Dykes over three sets, albeit marginally in the latter, and Paul Morris over four and Nigel Brook over five sets.

YMCA B’s Carl Keegan lost over four to Paul Morris and Nigel Brook, but beat Paul Dykes over three.

In the doubles, Chris and Carl took on Paul Dykes and Nigel and lost over four sets, albeit closely.

Ian Instone and Phil Cawser were outstanding for YMCA D in a 7-3 victory against Knottingley B.

Instone beat Dennis Shaw, Alan Yip and Tim Condon all over four sets.

Cawser achieved an even better treble, winning all his games over three sets, each by some good margins.

His partner Elana McClements couldn’t emulate her team mates, losing all of her three games, closely over four to Dennis and over three to Alan and Tim. However she won the doubles with partner Phil, over five very close sets against Dennis and Tim.
