PONTEFRACT Squash Club’s James Willstrop has reached the semi-finals of the US Open in Philadelphia.
In last night’s (Tuesday) quarterfinals, world number one Willstrop overcame Egyptian Mohamed El Shorbagy 11-6, 7-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-5 in a thrilling match that lasted 85 minutes.
In the semi-finals, Willstrop (pictured) meets Frenchman Gregory Gaultier, who he beat 3-2 in two hours at the recent British Grand Prix in Manchester.
Gaultier defeated Karim Darwish in four sets in the quarterfinals in Philadelphia.
In the first round, Willstrop beat Alister Walker (Botswana) 3-1 and then then defeated fellow English international Daryl Selby 9-11, 11-4, 12-10, 11-5.
Willstrop’s Pontefract teammate Saurav Ghosal lost 3-0 to Ramy Ashour in the first round but it was far from easy for the Egyptian maestro.
All three games were close, with Ghosal only losing out on a tiebreak in the second by 13-11 and then 11-9 in the third.
