FOUR swimmers from the Able2 Swim Club, based at Featherstone Pool, have returned home triumphant from the National Halliwick Swimming Championships.

The championships were held at the Active Living Centre, Pontypool, South Wales on Saturday and saw Thomas Raddings, from Ackworth, Sarah Shutt, of Featherstone, Oliver Peace, of Upton, and Gavin Shaw, of Nevis, competing as part of the Yorkshire ASTRA5 squad. Swimmers qualified through the Regional Championships at Hull in June.

In the relay events, Thomas won a silver medal as a member of the junior team. Sarah, Oliver and Gavin finished in bronze medal position with the senior relay team. Oliver and Gavin dominated the individual men’s races, Oliver winning gold in the 25m event and Gavin gold in the 50m race.

At the prize-giving ceremony, Oliver was awarded the LT Revenue Cup while Gavin received the George Lyons Trophy - both were crowned as UK Champions for 2011. With an array of medals awarded to the ASTRA5 team, Yorkshire finished in second place overall.

Thomas, Oliver and Sarah also compete for the Able2 Pontefract Special Olympics team. They are returning to South Wales this weekend to represent their county again in the Special Olympics National Aquatics Championships in Cardiff.
