OFF-THE-RAILS, the Five Towns Quiz League’s all-girl team, won the Handicap Cup final in only their second season in the league on Monday.

They survived a last round thriller to pip Flanagan’s New Dudes who were beaten finalists for the second successive year.

Off-the-Rails started with an advantage of 45 points to 29 for Flanagan’s. The handicap system is based on the teams’ average league match scores for the recently finished season.

Off-the-Rails were ahead most of the match but entering the last round they were only eight points in front.

Flanagan’s hit back to make it all square with two questions left for Off-the-Rails and one for the Dudes.

Flanagan’s would have won by one point had they got their own last question right and picked up the Off-the-Rails’ last question for a bonus.

However, even though Flanagan’s did end up picking up the bonus they had failed on their own question, leaving Off-the-Rails to win by two points with a final score of 98-96 including the handicaps.

The league’s pairs quiz, held the same evening, was won by Diane Hallagan of Wanderers and Shirley Helm of RAFA Vulcan Club. Playing pairs are drawn at random in a raffle.
