Pontefract jockey Jacob shines at Chantilly

TEENAGE Pontefract jockey Jacob Butterfield enhanced his reputation as one of this country’s leading young riders when he was part of a three-man Great Britain team at a major French race meeting on Sunday.

Butterfield (pictured), along with fellow apprentices George Chaloner and Ian Burns, was selected to represent his country at the 2012 European Association of Racing Schools Race, which took place at the famous Chantilly track in France.

The EARS race is an annual competition uniting 15 of Europe’s talented young jockeys, providing them with an opportunity to demonstrate their talent on the European flat racing stage. Five countries currently form the European Association of Racing Schools – England, France, Germany, Ireland and Italy and these countries were represented in the race.

It took place this year on one of the most prestigious dates in the racing calendar, when the Prix de Diane Longines, the equivalent of our Oaks, was run with more than 30,000 spectators attending.

Pontefract jockey Jacob led the way for the British team, finishing third on board 25/1 shot Piccolo. He received a number of prizes for his efforts and had a celebrity moment when the crowd literally pulled him off his horse to congratulate him

Butterfield is based with trainer Ollie Pears in Malton after originally starting at the Northern Racing College on the 14 – 16 Training Scheme while at school. He went on to do his apprenticeship training at the college and is part of the Jockey Qualification Pilot Scheme.

He was recently asked by former champion jockey Kevin Darley to appear with him in a television programme, The Hairy Bikers Diet, to give dietary advice on how to keep weight balanced.

Success on the track came Jacob’s way when he rode a winner at Windsor on Gracies Games, but he also incurred the wrath of racing stewards for the first time, picking up a ban that was later overturned because rules were unclear.
