Pontefract make the right moves

PONTEFRACT Chess Club made it three victories from three games in Yorkshire League Division Three by winning 6-2 at Wakefield C.

Pontefract won the first four games after Bill Pinder put them on their way by destroying his opponent, using the centre counter opening to good effect.

Mateusz Szczepaniuk proved too strong for his young opponent, Norman Carr steadily gained material and Roy Thomas, back in the team, won after gaining a queen.

Can Goven then salvaged a draw from what looked a losing position to give Pontefract an unassailable lead.

The only blip on Pontefract’s performance came when Dave Parton’s careless opening play caused him to lose his game. Top board Steve Parker had another win after making the most of his sound position and Chris Roche agreed a draw in a solid position.

Pontefract are in top spot but stiffer challenges are ahead.
