Sarah sets new world records

FEATHERSTONE swimmer Sarah Shutt (pictured) has set six new world records.

Sarah, 37, was among four athletes who represented Able2 Pontefract Special Olympics at the seventh annual British Learning Disability Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge Sports Centre, Sheffield.

Sarah, James Tulley, 14, of Pontefract, Thomas Raddings, 14, of Ackworth, and Oliver Peace, 19, of Upton, competed against the top swimmers from England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the Channel Islands.

They were rewarded with a host of medals and new personal bests.

Oliver took gold in the fastest heat final of the 25 metre breaststroke to become 2012 British champion, retaining the title he won last year.

Following ratification by the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO), Sarah’s times, from the British Championships, have entitled her to seven European and six world records for freestyle and breaststroke.

Sarah’s incredible swimming earned her two open age world records and four masters world records. She also is the current open age European record holder for three events and masters European record holder in four.

Sarah will next compete in the Down Syndrome GB Championships in High Wycombe on July 14 to 15 where she will aim for more medals and records.

The third member of the IOC (International Olympic Committee), Special Olympics hosts its world summer Olympic Games and world winter Olympic Games in between the Olympics and Paralympics every four years.

Special Olympics also have their own national games and a continuous programme of coaching, training and competitions for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Able2 Pontefract Special Olympics train at Featherstone Sports Centre. For further information, contact Steve Peace on 07551648661.
