TEENAGE Knottingley boxer Popi Burton was chosen to make her debut for an England select team against Australia at the Hull Arena.
Popi, 16, went into the bout having won eight of her last nine fights and maintained her tremendous form.
Training seven days a week has seen her shed almost a stone in a month and she was in confident form in her contest against Beth Nicholson, from Queensland, Australia.
Beth, also 16, had won eight of her first nine fights so was expected to be a big test and in a cautious first round both boxers had tight guards and used all their skill until half-way through when Burton started to get her range and began to get on top.
Round two saw a more relaxed Burton stepping up the pace, making the Aussie miss and counter punching well to be in control of the fight.
The Knottingley boxer was full of confidence in the third round and boxing a great fight to end up winning pretty easily.
Coaches Pedro Carragher and Steve Heale were delighted with Popi’s brilliant display and the way she handled the pressure against a good opponent.
SYD Ringside are still looking for sponsors to enable Knottingley boxers Popi Burton and Sam McLean to take a trip to Sweden to face Europe’s finest in an international boxing competition.
