Young scrum-half Ryan Brierley has turned down a chance to return to Castleford Tigers, according to his current club Leigh Centurions.

Brierley, 21, came through the academy ranks at Castleford and was offered a chance to return to Super League for next year, but has decided instead to stay with Championship side Leigh after signing a new two-year contract.

He has been a prolific scorer since joining the Centurions from Castleford two years ago, initially on loan, and has topped their try table in the last two seasons.

Leigh director Andy Mazey said: “We were fully aware of Castleford’s and the other Super League clubs’ interest so it gives me great pleasure to announce that we were able to retain and reward one of the game’s brightest young talents.”

Brierley said: “I’m excited to be part of Leigh Centurions’ long-term plans.

“Playing for Leigh means a lot to me and it’s clear that, having spoken at length with Paul and representatives of the new board, that the club is ambitious and its plans match those of my own to play in Super League.”
