After declaring himself happy with the team’s display at Doncaster last weekend, Castleford Tigers boss Daryl Powell is looking for his side to take another step up in their biggest pre-season warm-up at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle on Sunday.

The Tigers are unbeaten in pre-season so far against opponents from the Championship, but fellow Super League side Widnes Vikings make the trip across the Pennines this weekend and Powell is set to field a strong line-up as preparations for the season proper get more serious.

He told the Express: “We’re starting to get to the point where the games mean something in terms of results so I’ll be selecting a team pretty carefully looking towards our first Super League game against Wakefield.

“Michael Shenton should be in for his first game and a lot of the boys who didn’t play against Doncaster will be involved.

“Our preparations are coming along well. I thought 75 per cent of our game was excellent against Doncaster.

“We’ve got some work to do in terms of our attacking, structuring good ball. We’ll keep working on that and tidy that up, but overall it was really pleasing.”
