CASTLEFORD Tigers have beaten off interest from rival clubs to secure the signature of highly-rated England Academy hooker Casey Canterbury until the end of the 2014 season.

Canterbury (pictured), who came through the Tigers scholarship, excelled for the under 18s last season before playing a major part in helping the under 20s rise reach the Valvoline Cup play-off semi finals.

He has already established himself as first choice hooker for the under 20s despite still being eligible to play under 18s.

The former Hunslet Parkside junior won the Castleford Tigers Supporters Club young player of the year award last year and has been selected for the England Academy train on squad ahead of the upcoming series against Australia.

Tigers head coach Ian Millward, who keeps a close eye on all Tigers academy games, said: “It is good news for the club that Casey has committed to this contract. I’ve been very impressed with what I have seen of Casey and the development staff rate him very highly. He’s seen that Cas gives youngsters opportunities to full fill their dreams in Super League.

“It’s a good sign for the club’s future, with our current hookers in the squad it creates a great talent pool with depth for future years with Adam Milner and Daryl Clark also on long term deals.

“Casey is a real credit to the coaching staff in the scholarship and youth teams and it is with big thanks to the members of the Tigers Lottery that we have been able to secure him. Without the revenue coming from the Lottery it would be much harder to keep young kids like Casey from the grasp of our rivals.”
