A fan was ejected from the Featherstone Rovers ground after a firework was set off in the Community Stand during Saturday’s Middle 8s match against Leeds Rhinos.

The firework produced a huge bang in the 35th minute and the culprit was identified and ejected by stewards.

A Rovers spokesman said: “The club and the authorities will take the necessary action to ensure this individual is dealt with accordingly and apologies to those near the incident for any distress caused on what was, in the main, a fantastic afternoon.”

Apart from that isolated incident, the afternoon’s activities were a huge success at a fixture that attracted a record summer era crowd of 6,671 at a Featherstone match.

Curtain-raisers, bouncy castle, face-painting, dancers, food and drink outlets, stalls, giveaways, ice cream, half-time games, tatoos, the Featherstone Male Voice Choir and a rugby kicking game all contributed to a carnival atmosphere.

Volunteers and Rovers staff had worked tirelesssly over the last 10 days to put the event together and the club said the feedback from home and away supporters, plus Sky Sports and the media in general, was very positive.
