FEATHERSTONE Rovers’ new first-team captain is set to be announced in the New Year.

Rovers coach Jon Sharp says there are “plenty of candidates” following the departure of last season’s skipper Tim Spears.

“The captaincy is not something that keeps me awake on a night,” said Sharp.

“I think we’ve got some real leaders in there that are capable of shouldering that.

“The captaincy was very much a group thing anyway - a group of leaders who are highly experienced and know what I’m looking for, so the captaincy is not a biggie.

“There’s Darrell Griffin, Misi Taulapapa, Kyle Briggs and Ian Hardman and that’s just from the blokes that have been around me and been around this team.

“Keal Carlile has some experience and is a smart bloke and I’m sure could do a good job so there’s plenty of candidates.”

Rovers will be checking on Briggs who is trying to shake off the ankle trouble that sidelined him last season.

Said Sharp: “Kyle is still struggling with his ankle. He’s going to have a cortisone injection to see if that works.”
