Featherstone Rovers moved level on points with fifth-placed Bradford Bulls with Sunday’s 44-22 win against the Championship’s bottom team Workington Town at Big Fellas Stadium.
Winger Jamie Foster grabbed a try and kicked six goals as Rovers bounced back from a 35-10 defeat at Sheffield Eagles.
Try-scoring half-backs Kyle Briggs and Anthony Thackeray were also important contributors to Featherstone’s sixth victory in 14 months over the Cumbrians.
Coach Jon Sharp’s men kept alive their top-four challenge by building a match-winning 28-4 half-time lead.
They quickly went ahead when John Davies swapped passes with Michael Channing to send in Leeds Rhinos’ dual-registered winger Ash Handley.
Workington replied with the first of Declan Hulme’s two tries but Featherstone regained control when Jamie Cording went over from Thackeray’s pass and Briggs scored a delightful solo try.
Home prop Colton Roche was sin-binned in the 23rd minute for a high tackle but 12-man Rovers shot further ahead when Thackeray twisted his way over.
Shortly before half-time, Davies put in Channing for Featherstone’s fifth try and they added three more touchdowns early in the second-half.
Good work by Ian Hardman and Misi Taulapapa saw Foster go over and Hardman also darted in before Tim Spears finished a superb move involving Thackeray and Misi Taulapapa to make it 44-4.
Workington scored three converted tries in the last 15 minutes after Rovers were disrupted by minor injuries to Roche, Cording and Taulapapa which led to forward Jack Ormondroyd playing at centre.
Hulme grabbed his second, Callum Phillips put in brother Brett and Marc Shackley also crossed, with Jarrod Sammut added his third goal, but it was too far late to rescue Town.
