Featherstone Rovers made it three wins from four games in the Kingstone Press Championship with Sunday’s 24-12 victory at Halifax.

Paul Sykes scored a try and kicked four goals as Rovers bounced back from the previous week’s home defeat against Bradford Bulls by picking up two vital points.

It should put them in good heart for next Sunday’s home match against Leigh Centurions..

Featherstone, whose line-up included Wakefield dual reg players Joe Arundel, Tom Johnstone, Pita Godinet and Kyle Trout, made a great start with a fifth minute try.

Arundel was held up on the try line before the ball was worked wide to Sykes who went in for a try he also goaled.

Gareth Moore then had an effort ruled out for offside as Rovers pressed again.

Halifax suffered a setback when full-back Miles Greenwood was stretchered off with a serious leg injury before Rovers increased their lead in the 13th minute when Moore’s high kick to the corner set up a try for Tom Johnnstone.

Halifax hit back in the 30th minute when sustained pressure led to Steve Tyrer scoring a try he also converted to cut the half-time gap to 10-6.

Rovers survived further Halifax pressure in the second-half before they increased their lead.

Halifax’s Scott Murrell was sin-binned in the 58th minute and Rovers soon capitalised on the extra man when Andy Ellis went over from acting half and Sykes converted.

With 10 minutes left, Sykes kicked a penalty to put Rovers 18-6 up.

Halifax put the issue back in doubt when Mitch Cahalane scored from close range and Tyrer goaled but Rovers sealed victory when clever play by Ellis sent in Arundel for a debut try and Sykes added his fourth goal.
