IT was all systems go at Featherstone Rovers’ game against Dewsbury on Sunday as the community development department hosted their first tournament of the 2012 season as a curtain raiser to the main event.

The event attracted under 9s teams from community clubs across the West Yorkshire area including Featherstone Lions, Thornhill Trojans, Shaw Cross Sharks, Normanton Knights, Batley Boys, Stanley Rangers and Kippax Welfare.

The final was played at half-time to the main match and saw Normanton and Shaw Cross battle out a draw. But all the teams were presented with commemorative medals and enjoyed taking part in a lap of honour round the pitch.

Rovers community development manager Laurabeth Jaggar said: “The day was an outstanding success, I would like to commend the coaches and players who took part for their superb attitudes and professionalism, each and everyone a credit to their club.

“I would like to extend my thanks to the parents and supporters of the children for taking part in our game day experience and of course the Featherstone Rovers supporters for giving a warm welcome to the future stars of Rugby League and cheering them along at the game.

“The community development department will play a huge role in the club’s Destination Super League campaign and by getting involved and getting behind activities such as this everyone is playing a vital and valuable role on our journey. We’re in this together.”

At the next Rovers home game on Sunday March 4, the community team, in partnership with Fev Rovers Tuch ‘n’ Tag team, will host a touch Rugby League tournament, which will kick-off at 12.15pm.
