Featherstone Rovers climbed up to second place in the Kingstone Press Championship after they ran in five tries to beat Doncaster 28-12 at a cold Keepmoat Stadium.
Doncaster started and finished strongly, but Rovers had too much for the second from bottom team in between and played some attractive rugby with victory never in doubt once they had gone ahead in the first half..
Rovers did have to withstand an early barrage from the hosts in the first half before their extra class shone through.
Doncaster scored first after eight minutes when centre Dan Cowling forced his way over in the corner and Paul Cooke added the touchline conversion.
The hosts came within inches of two more tries before Featherstone hit back to level as centre Greg Worthington showed good pace to finish off a flowing move and Liam Finn goaled.
Prop Steve Crossley then blasted over and with Finn landing his second kick Rovers were ahead and never to lose the lead.
Winger Tommy Saxton did well to get the ball down for a third try for the visitors with Finn on target again with the touchline conversion, but the Dons narrowed the gap to 10 points at half-time with a Paul Cooke penalty with the last kick of the half.
Featherstone stretched their lead two minutes after the break through Saxton again and when Lamont Bryan went through a gap for Rovers’ fifth try on the hour it was effectively all over at 28-8.
To their credit, Doncaster came back in the closing stages with full-back Mick Butterfield crashing over for their second try.
Ben Blackmore then looked unlucky to have a “try” ruled out for a forward pass by Paul Cooke, but Rovers were also denied by the officials after Andy Kain was adjudged to have lost the ball over the line.
