Full-back Max Jowitt grabbed the winning try five minutes from time as Wakefield Wildcats recovered from 18-6 down to pip Featherstone Rovers 22-18 in Sunday’s pre-season game at Big Fellas Stadium.

Championship outfit Rovers were the best side for 60 minutes in the heavy conditions but Super Leaguers Wakefield finished the stronger to bag their second pre-season win following a Boxing Day victory at Leeds Rhinos.

In the end, both teams scored four tries and Featherstone were also unlucky to have a 57th minute effort by Anthony Thackeray controversially disallowed.

Jordan Tansey scored two tries and kicked three goals for the Wildcats.

Reece Lyne was Wakefield’s other scorer with a superb 35-yard individual effort.

John Davies, who had an outstanding game, put Rovers ahead with an eighth minute try.

Wakefield hit back but Rovers then took charge with three tries in six minutes from Ian Hardman, Jack Ormnondroyd and debutant Misi Taulapapa.

Lyne’s try put Wakefield only 18-10 behind at the break and they gradually wore down Rovers in the second-half with Craig Hall setting up Jowitt’s late winner.

Both coaches were pleased with the run-out.

Wakefield coach Brian Smith said: “We did finish the game strongly which we should do as full-time players. We came back with 16 unanswered points to win it and those things were all encouraging.”

Rovers boss Jon Sharp said: “I thought we made some steps forward from our first pre-season game at Castleford.

“I thought it was a really good work out for both teams.”
