Lions, who were eventually pipped 8-4, set off at a great pace and took the game to their well-drilled opponents from the outset.

Half backs Josh Milthorpe and Charlie Harris dictated play and strong running from Taigh Newman, Leo Brown, Kai Slatter, Oliver Peacock, and Jamie Higgins caused West Hull problems.

Lions were well on top early on. Elliott Bell, Findlay Gill and Kian Blacher made good yards before Alex Walker’s break and off-load saw Milthorpe’s pinpoint kick well taken by Jack Bower who scored the opening try.

Lions piled forward and Bower, Milthorpe, Newman and Bell all went close but were foiled by excellent West Hull defending.

West Hull hit back in the second-half after making a double substitution.

A spell of pressure led to them levelling the scores.

Lions were finding it hard to make ground but they defended superbly, with Newman setting a great lead and well supported by Spencer Atkinson, Slatter, Brown, Milthorpe and Peacock.

Last ditch tackles from Bell, Newman and Gill kept the scores level before West Hull took advantage of a tiring defence to score at the corner with seven minutes remaining. Lions tried hard to turn the tables and Harris and Milthorpe both went close in the closing stages.

Lions could be proud of their efforts after producing a tremendous display. Their inability to turn first-half pressure into points cost them in the end.
