A thrilling end to a great tournament saw St Thomas a Becket hang on for a dramatic 20-18 victory over Castleford Academy in the 2013 Castleford Tigers Year 8 Boys Trust Cup final.
Castleford Academy went into the match as strong favourites to lift the cup after some pulsating rugby league in the group stages, but were undone by the surprise package of St Thomas a Becket, who had defeated Carlton and Kettlethorpe to reach the final.
At half-time Castleford held a slender 12-6 lead and they started the second half the better, but their opponents fought back strongly against a much bigger pack.
With one minute left and Castleford trailing by two points a penalty was awarded to the Academy for a high tackle, sparking scenes reminiscent of the ‘Water Splash’ Challenge Cup Final as the kicker struck the ball followed by shouts of “he’s missed it, he’s missed it” from the St Thomas players.
Academy threw everything at their opponents, but St Thomas a Becket hung on tenaciously for a great win.
Both teams received a chat for their efforts from the Tigers’ head of youth development, Richard Tunningley, who then presented medals to both teams and the winning trophy to captain Eddie Wilcock.
Try scorers in the final for St Thomas a Becket were Harry Crabtree, Clayton Lynch and Eddie Wilcock (two). Jay Sheridan kicked one goal and Will Marshall kicked the winner.
