David Wainwright’s terrific all-round display helped Castleford to a morale-boosting 103-run win over Sheffield Collegiate in the Yorkshire ECB Premier League on Saturday.
Derbyshire player Wainwright starred with the bat as he hit a century then took three wickets with the ball as Sheffield fell well short of the total posted by Castleford.
After choosing to bat first, Castleford recovered from the early loss of Luke Frankland and Dominic Sharp to get on top with a 92-run third-wicket stand between Wainwright and Alex Romaniw, who hit 44.
John Randerson then gave Wainwright great support in a 106-run partnership before falling to a catch after hitting 11 fours and two sixes in a 45-ball knock of 69.
Wainwright was run out, but not before he had made 107, including 12 boundaries. Jack Shutt weighed in with 20 late on and Castleford reached 277-8 from their 55 overs.
Collegiate were all out for 174 despite 64 from Guy and 35 not out by Josh Varley. Wainwright led the Cas attack with 3-26 while Eddie Morrison took 2-43 and Shutt 2-42.
Despite a fine century from Nathan Smith, Castleford Seconds lost by six wickets to Pickering in Division Three North of the York Senior League.
Smith hit 106 not out, but only David Tomlinson (31) could give him much support as Cas made 181-9.
Pickering’s chase was underpinned by Ian Smith (54) and Matthew Butler (69) as they got home with plenty to spare.
Castleford under 11s lost out to Rothwell in the Pontefract Junior League’s Percy Lane Cup despite a good all-round effort by Jack Young.
Batting first, Cas were restricted to 48-4 with Young scoring 11 and Harry Render 18.
Rothwell reached their target for the loss of three wickets, all of which were taken by Young, who ended with figures of 3-13 from four overs.
