Townville came out on top in a low scoring opening day encounter with local rivals Methley in the Premier Division of the Central Yorkshire Cricket League.
After being put in and then dismissed for only 86 Townville’s hopes of victory in their first game of the season looked slim, but they produced a superb effort in the field to run out winners by 15 runs.
New signing Kylinn Vardhan was their star as he top scored with 48 and claimed four wickets with the ball.
Townville were soon in trouble in their innings as young Methley opening bowler Matthew Waite claimed a hat-trick, dismissing Jonathan Booth, Kris Ward and Jack Hughes with successive balls to leave the visitors on 16-4.
They never really recovered and Vardhan was their only batsman to reach double figures with Waite finishing with 4-12, Jack Rich 3-11 and Marcus Walmsley 2-28.
Methley’s reply started well enough with an opening stand of 37 between Nick Connolly (33) and Richard Foster (16), but they lost their last nine wickets for just 21 runs to be all out for 71.
Vardhan (4-18 off 15 overs) did the damage along with Hughes, whose 13.1 overs cost just eight runs as he took four wickets. On his return to Townville, Nick Bresnan took 2-12.
Methley A lost their opening game in Division One by 101 runs to Liversedge first team.
After choosing to field first they struggled with Liversedge making 278-6 in their 50 overs. Andy Ward (3-65), James Gahan (2-34) and Joshua Thurwell (1-55) were the wicket takers.
In reply, Methley ensured their opponents did not collect maximum points as they batted out their allotted overs to make 177-5. Ward top scored with 67 not out with David Willey contributing 38, Gahan 23 and Michael Mellor 15 not out.
Townville A lost by four wickets to Caribbean in Division Two after being bowled out for 115.
Dale Jones (34) and Steve Walton (29) top scored while Jones (4-43), Matthew Hughes (1-20) and Neil Norton (1-27) were wicket takers for Townville.
Townville made it two wins in two days when they beat Spen Victoria by eight wickets in the first round of the Heavy Woollen Cup.
After restricting Spen to 195-9 with Jonathan Booth (4-33), Kylinn Vardhan (2-20), Jack Hughes (2-32) and Richie Bresnan (1-26) taking the wickets, they then completed a comfortable victory with 18 overs to spare.
Vardhan (55 not out) and Hughes (23 not out) brought Townville home after openers Tim Walton (54) and Jonathan Booth (46) paved the way.
Despite 100 from Marcus Walmsley and 73 by Foster Methley lost their first round tie by two wickets to Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.
The Cavaliers did well to chase down a big target after Methley had made 261.
