We gave away too many penalties - Powell

COACH Daryl Powell was disappointed with Featherstone's execution with the ball in Sunday's 18-18 draw against Sheffield Eagles in the Northern Rail Cup at Bigfellas Stadium.

Rovers started both halves well but then lost their way and they didn't look as sharp as they had in the 34-22 pre-season victory against Hull Kingston Rovers.

They were 12-8 down at half-time but looked favourites when debutant centre Liam Welham scored two tries in three minutes early in the second-half to complete his hat-trick and put them 18-12 up.

However, Sheffield snatched a draw with a last gasp try from Craig Cook and Jonny Woodcock's third goal.

It came shortly after Andy Kain missed an easy drop goal attempt that would have given Rovers a seven-point advantage.

Jon Steel was Featherstone's other try scorer and Kyle Briggs kicked one goal.

Rovers boss Powell (pictured) said: "We got a draw and we are on the board and we've got to work from here.

"We gave away far too many penalties and our execution with the ball was down on what we would expect. We got dragged down into a battle and we weren't quite good enough.

"However, it's all about developing your game. We've got something to work from and we've got a few things we can look at and improve and that's what it is all about at this stage of the season.

"I think from an individual point of view it was difficult to pick out any of our players as being outstanding. It was one of those games where we just had too mamy scrappy bits.

"There were good bits to Liam Welham's game but I thought he has a lot to do in terms of his defensive game."
