Winning start to track and field season for Maria

Maria Schofield, of Pontefract Athletics Club, started her outdoor track and field season in brilliant style, winning the under 13 girls shot putt in the Wakefield Spring Open Meeting and setting a new Pontefract club record of 7.60 metres.

Her performance achieved an England Athletics Grade 3 standard. Maria also finished third in the high jump with 1.20m.

William Godridge also set a Pontefract club record, finishing second in the under 15 boys shot putt with a throw of 9.23 metres.

Amy Brain started her season well with an excellent second place finish in the under 13 girls long jump. Her 3.95 metres was a personal best and an England Athletics Grade 4 standard. Amy also finished fourth in the 800m s in 2 minutes 45.23 seconds.

Lewis Schofield was third in the under 15 boys shot putt with 7.53 metres and third in the 80m hurdles in 16.26 seconds.

Promising performances came from Isabelle Stones finishing fourth in the under 11 girls 80m in 12.76 seconds and fifth in the long jump and Emily Plimmer who was second in her heat and sixth overall on her debut for the club in the under 11 girls 600m. Abigail Clegg finished seventh quickest in the 600m and sixth in the long jump.

William Carter recorded three personal bests, finishing fourth in the under 17 men’s 100m hurdles, fifth in the discus and sixth in the shot putt. Emily Carter came fifth in the under 15 girls shot putt.

Pontefract’s Faye Banks made an impressive return to competitive running after the birth of her second child when winning the women’s race in last Saturday’s Pontefract Park Run in 20 minutes 7 seconds. Scott Daly finished seventh out of 130 in 18 minutes 51 seconds.
