Richard Stelmach, a website designer from Pontefract, has been utilizing his lockdown time to create comics to raise money and to lift spirits during these unprecedented times.

He set himself a challenge of drawing 50 comic strips in 50 days to raise money for Comic Relief.

Richard said: “As the pandemic started in the UK, I found myself instinctively turning to drawing the comic strips as a way of dealing with stress of the whole situation.

“I do a lot of art in my spare time anyway, particularly watercolour paintings and comic strips are another one of my hobbies within that.

“I have asthma so I can’t do much to help at the moment, I was really worried about volunteering and putting myself at risk, so I began doing this instead to raise money and to bring entertainment to people every day.

“As I started doing that, I came up with an idea to give myself 50 days to try and raise £250 for Comic Relief.

“After thinking about all the problems people are going to have as a result of the crisis I really wanted to do something to help.”

Richard has set up a Justgiving page for people to donate to his cause.

He posts his comics on his website called ‘Covid Comics’ and also uploads them to his Instagram and Twitter pages.

Richard said: “I’ve been drawing my whole life, and with me working in web design, I get to be quite creative in my occupation.

“A lot of my comics tend to feature animals, in the future I’d like to do more raising awareness around climate change.”
