First-ever online film night to be shown for Artwalk Wakefield

The film night will take place on Wednesday January 27, showcasing films by artists, performers, filmmakers and organisations across ArtWalk’s social media channels and websites.

Art Walk, a bi-monthly event that showcases works of creatives, usually takes place in Wakefield city centre.

However, since the first lockdown in March 2020, Artwalk Wakefield has moved all its activity online with the hope of providing the opportunity to experiment with new ideas.

A wide range of films by local creatives will be available to watch, including live performances, artist talks and more experimental films.

Jen Garrick, marketing and communications director, said: “This is ArtWalk’s first film night, there will be more information listed on our website where people can take the time to explore them in more detail.

“As well as sharing artists' creative content from across Wakefield, we’re going to be sharing a whole host of film recommendations for further viewing.

“We’re focused on recommendations for films that have good artistry ones about the art world and artists.

“We feel it’s imperative to keep putting content out and connect with audiences and be creative, we’re also aware of how disconnected and discombobulated everyone is with the January we’ve been handed.

“The film night will be a dose of something a bit different to keep people going, it’s essentially a hub offering intellectually stimulating content for people to dip into.”

Featured films that will showcase on the night include local artist, Bev Adam’s puppetry piece entitled ‘Covid Conversations’ and ‘Social Dis’dance’, a dance piece performed in the closed galleries of Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

Also a feature film from Wakefield’s Long Division music festival looking back on its ten-year history in the city, is being shown publicly for the first time.

Upon a brief from ArtWalk, people across the Wakefield District of all ages and experience have each sent in a 1-5 second video clips that they’ve captured, inspired by the theme ‘Light in Dark Times’.

The clips have been edited into a collaborative film, acting as a snapshot of Wakefield in lockdown at the start of a new year.

Amy Lilley, Artwalk producer said: “In these difficult times we wanted to make something that would connect and challenge us, and most importantly, bring our amazing Artwalk audience together to do something fun!”
