Knitters light up Wakefield city centre with 'granny square' tapestries
The archways can be found at The Ridings and Trinity Walk shopping centres and were put up to mark Yorkshire Day on 1 August and also to welcome people back to the high street as lockdown eases.
Following a call to actiob by Wakefield Council, lots of groups and individuals sent in their colourful ‘granny squares’ and these were sewn together by volunteers to tie around the archways, donated by LITE.

Hide AdCoun Maureen Cummings, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Communities and Poverty, said: “I’m really pleased to see that so many people have given it a go and sent in their squares, the tapestries look wonderful and really make you smile.
“It makes me very proud of our strong communities across the district and I hope it helps to lift everyone’s spirits as we all start to recover from lockdown.
“And a big thank you to the many volunteers who have given their time to brighten up the city centre.”
Visitors can walk under the Archways and view the patterns, and share their selfies on social media at https://www.facebook.com/WakefieldCentralWhereILive using #WakefieldsWay and #HookedOnWakefield
The exhibition will be up throughout this week and the blankets will then be donated to the RSPCA to keep the animals warm throughout the winter.
