Big O tribute sure to be a hit

In very nearly a quarter of a century of writing about clubland in local newspapers, I have never been bombarded with requests for coverage by local clubpeople as I have been lately.

Just a few weeks ago this column was merged and now appears in three publications.

For that reason I am trying to give preference to clubs and entertainment venues which advertise around this column.

I know that times are hard, but advertising here reaches many more people than any other publication and if you advertise here, I am much more likely to plug your club and events. I’m afraid it’s as simple as that folks.

There has been some real excitement about the Roy Orbison tribute band Blue Bayou and their forthcoming appearance at Crigglestone WMC.

This band is big news and their drummer is former Crigg resident musician Colin Dack. I shall be writing more about this event in next week’s Express, so watch this space.

Among the acts I have seen on my travels during the last week or so was Jimmy Echo. In my view, Jimmy is as complete an all-round entertainer as we have in our area and he was in fine comedy and music form when I saw his act last Friday evening.

There is another talent show to enjoy in our area as Glass Houghton WMC in Castleford is the latest club in the Five Towns district to present such an event. Local promoter Steve Paige is the man behind the show and more information can be obtained from the venue.

Sections of this competition are open to both adults and children.

The Church House in South Kirkby is the place at see South Elmsall all-girl act Sugarush this weekend. The girls are all set for a Friday night visit and Kaz Cross from Sugarush was in touch with news of the gig.

Ladybalk Social Club in Pontefract is on the up and up since the club was rescued by a consortium of its members.

Club secretary Mal Cunningham tells me that the new Friday night shows are going well and I shall hopefully find some space to mention this resurgent club’s endeavours in a future issue.

In the meantime, Ladybalk is looking forward to visits from local singers Clare Miller and Sarah Pollin, which can’t be bad.

In next week’s column I hope to be mentioning some big summer shows at clubs right across our area, from Alverthorpe WMC in Wakefield to Pontefract Sports and Social Club, so keep reading as I know from the vast numbers of calls and e-mails I receive that you all do.

If you have any news or views for this column we would like to hear from you. Just drop me a line at the Express, e-mail [email protected] or call my office number on 01924 890800 and leave a message.
