Cathedral filled with magic

However no woollies were required as her engaging wit and fantastic music warmed up a packed house last Friday night.

Backed by a four-piece band, including her husband Damien O’Kane, Kate’s set concentrated on songs from her more recent albums Underneath the Stars, The Girl Who Couldn’t Fly, Awkward Annie and last year’s Make the Light.

Interspersed with her characteristic anecdotes, tall tales and explanations of the songs – “This is a typical English traditional song; boy meets girl, girl meets boy, boy falls in love with girl, girl can’t be bothered” – Kate beguiled with ballads like No Names, Only Hope and Green Fields, and on rollicking numbers like The Goodman, The Blind Harper and Awkward Annie.

As well as performing tracks from her back catalogue, the night contained extra treats as Damien O’Kane stepped to the fore to sing the exquisite Summer Hill, the title track from his own album, while in the second half Kate left ‘the boys’ to play a trio of tunes with an Irish flavour.

The cathedral was a spectacular setting for the gig, beautifully enhanced by the lighting and top quality sound, all contributing to a truly magical evening for all.
