Cheeky Charley

A BORN-to-be-wild petrol head and member of the Hollywood round table, Charley Boorman is laying his tales bare next week at Theatre Royal Wakefield talking frankly about living life at 100mph.

Charley – who is famous for having a blast on his beloved motorcycle with pal and actor Ewan Mcgregor – gives audiences a rare chance to take a peek at a real Hollywood resident under the microscope.

The Speaking Tour 2011 will join Charley and host Billy Ward for an evening of “personal stories” brought to life by videos and photos of Charley’s adventures.

Charley said: “The night is going to be pretty personal, I’ve got no skeletons in my closest because my wife would have dragged them out years ago, there’s no hiding anything from her.

“There’s nothing that I could hide even if I wanted to.”

“I think you can never really understand why you end up doing the things the you do, and that’s the best way for it to be.

“The show started with that in mind, I was talking to Billy and we had so many videos and photos from my motor bike trips that he said you should really use these.”

His highly acclaimed series of documentaries, featured on BBC, Sky and National Geographic channels, have given his passionate fixation with motorbikes a lucrative loophole, turning his tales of racing across Asia, Europe and Africa into book and DVD deals.

“It’ll be about the highs and lows of our trips, we rode 4,000 miles on Tarmac on one trip and there were times when the only reason we got through was because we had to believe it would end!

“Sometimes we would just keep breaking down and sit at the side of the road and I would look at Ewan and we both thought ‘what are we doing here?’

“Biking is my passion though, I am a self-confessed petrol head and I want to share those memories with everyone.”

His father John Boorman raised Charley in the decadent Hollywood hills, while making a successful career as a director.

“I learnt a lot from my father, he was the one that inspired me to go travelling.

“Growing up in Hollywood was great but when it’s what you know certain things don’t have the same wow factor – I still get star struck though.

“When I went to the premiere of Moulin Rouge with Ewan he introduced me to Kylie Minogue, who I’d had a crush from the first moment I saw her on Ramsay Street.

“I tried to talk to her but all that came out was gurgles and I had to just close my mouth and walk away!”

Charley will be pulling up for the show in Wakefield on Tuesday November 15. Tickets cost £14-£17.50, available from www.theatreroyalwake field.co.uk or 01924 211 311.
