The Cribs’ city gig

INDIE rockers The Cribs have revealed they will play a one-off hometown gig next month.

The band, from Netherton, will take to the Theatre Royal Wakefield stage for a free show on Wednesday May 16 as part of the Jack Daniels – JD Roots tour.

In a statement, Ross, Gary and Ryan Jarman said: ‘We haven’t played in Wakefield since 2007 as all the venues seem to have disappeared.

“We last played at a place called Escobar. There were loads of kids who couldn’t get tickets for the show, so the streets were lined with people watching through the windows.

“It will be great to finally play here again after five years.”

The group – which will release its new album In the Belly of the Brazen Bull next month – hinted it could play a gig in Wakefield earlier this year.

The band last performed in the city in 2007, when fans packed into Escobar on Queen Street, which has now closed down, for a secret gig that was announced on the internet at the last minute.

Wakefield West Riding Theatre Company had originally planned to perform their version of The Sound of Music at Theatre Royal Wakefield every night that week, but have moved their Wednesday show to Monday May 14, to make way for the band.
