More live music lands in clubs

Hopetown Liberal Club in Normanton is the latest venue in our area to start a live band night, with a new Friday night show.

The live theme continues at Hopetown on Sunday evenings with house musicians backing visiting entertainers. As an entertainer myself, it really is such a luxury to be able to work with resident musicians these days.

I know that many clubgoers really miss those heydays for clubland, when every club boasted live musicians on their stage every week.

Club stars like Ebony Jordan, Steve Rose and Beebi Dell all pop up at Hopetown’s Sunday shows over the next few weeks, so why not pay them a visit? The club can be found just off Castleford Road in Normanton.

Brilliant duo Cats’ Eyes appear at Mill Lane Club in South Kirkby with a Saturday night show to look forward to. Ivor and Kirsty, who make up the act, really know how to put on a show so don’t be late.

I was very pleased to be invited to appear in and arrange the entertainment for the forthcoming South Kirkby Miners’ annual senior citizens show.

I will report more on what promises to be a great night in a few weeks’ time, but appearing on the night, along with myself, will be two great singers – Laura Ellis and Luke Murgatroyd.

Hemsworth Miners’ Social Club in Fitzwilliam is the place to be this weekend as clubland favourites The Manhattans are sure to pack the place when they take the stage at ‘The Pit Club’ on Sunday evening. The place should be buzzing for this one, so be early!

Just down the road at Moorthorpe Empire Club on the same night, 70s tribute band Jeepster are the star attraction, so there really is lots to choose from this weekend.

The accent is very much on youth talent this month at Edward VII Club in Allerton Bywater. No fewer than five of the eight acts on show come from the junior ranks of clubland talent, with the impressive Luke Murgatroyd taking the stage on March 20.

Another local girl Stephanie Sweeting pops up on stage at this fine club on Saturday March 26 and this talented teen is doing very well with her new singing career.

Any prospective new clubland acts who want to be seen by those nice people at Ricky Graham Leisure Agency can attend an audition night which is taking place later this month. Willow Park Club in Pontefract is the venue and there are spots available for aspiring entertainers to take part. The date of the show is Thursday March 31 and this could be the very first step on the ladder for someone.

Finally for this week, it’s always such a pleasure to hear good news from the club sector these days and Halfpenny Lane Club in Pontefract is a club which is on the up and up.

Club official Pete Viney was in touch last week to let me know how things were going. It all sounds very promising with a Northern Soul night coming on Friday night and The Grumbleweeds appearing the night after on Saturday March 12.

I’m told there may be a few tickets left for The Grumbleweeds, so why not call in and see if you can catch a night of laughter with the godfathers of British comedy in this resurgent club?
