Packed new theatre season

The season kicks off on September 1 with Wakefield Youth Music Theatre’s production of Les Miserables. This talented young company has produced a number of critically acclaimed shows in the past, including Boogie Nights, High School Musical, Footloose and West Side Story.

Comedy is also plentiful this season with top comedians like Rory Bremner, Paddy McGuinness, Omid Djalili and Stephen K Amos heading the bill.

Mick Martin’s new play Broken Time makes its world premiere at the theatre royal from September 21 to 25. Having won fans for producing Rastamouse for television, Three Stones Media how turns its attentions to this tale of power, money and the birth of rugby league.

There’s also more drama from Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds from October 6 to 8, with Dick Turpin’s Last Ride, a musical play by Daniel O’Brien, telling the story of the most famous highwayman of them all.

The John Godber Company and Theatre Royal Wakefield present The Debt Collectors from October 18 to 22 as part of an extensive UK tour.

This new play by John Godber mixes money and love, with the love of money, as two out-of-work actors fall into the world of debt recovery.

Music lovers can enjoy an eclectic mix, as jazz singer Clare Teal returns to Wakefield in November, while the Magic of Motown brings a cache of hits to the stage, and punks can rock out to the Sex Pistol Experience.

Enjoy an evening with adventurer Charley Boorman in November, while the same month sees folk entertainer Mike Harding sharing an evening of songs and stories.

An adult evening beckons with the Burlesque Variety Show on October 27, featuring circus skills and sideshow acts, along with burlesque performances.

Families have plenty of entertainment to enjoy with a range of shows for children. Peppa Pig makes a welcome return in October with a new show, Peppa Pig’s Treasure Hunt, following the success of last year’s Peppa Pig’s Party.

In true festive style, family favourite ballet The Nutcracker dances into October, while the theatre royal’s own pantomime Aladdin opens on December 1 until December 31.
