Taking a step forward with solo Billy Fury act

Wakefield duo Two Steps Forward were in fine form last weekend, with their combination of smooth harmonies and slick performance skills.

Dean and Jane were working on a show which I was involved with, so that gave me a great and rare opportunity to work alongside this lovely couple.

Dean also enjoyed a great night last weekend as a solo artiste. Dean has launched a Billy Fury tribute show and Wakefield City Club regulars took a look at Dean in action when he appeared there last Friday.

It seems that having more than one string to your professional bow is a must these days.

It’s Halloween night this weekend and I wonder if those lovely ladies from Wakefield duo Sassy are dressing up ghoulishly when they take to the stage tomorrow night at Crofton wmc. Sassy are a brace of local lasses who always dress to impress.

I may well pop into Wakefield City Club this weekend to take a look at Clubland newcomer Natasha Parks.

I am hearing very good reports on this young lady, especially from her agent Jane Tracie and I know that the acts on Sunday night at The City Club perform in the lounge area.

One or two City Club regulars have been in touch asking me to comment more on activities in the lounge area.

When club officials get in touch with me to ask for a mention on this club, they always stress the importance of the Friday night shows in the club concert room, so perhaps I have neglected mentioned the lounge entertainment at this popular club.

A visit this weekend may give me the opportunity to put matters to rights.

Smooth balladeer Paul Stewart is always worth listening to and Alverthorpe wmc will be the club where Paul visits this weekend for a Sunday night show. A good night is assured I would imagine.

New Wakefield resident Alistair Raine is, in my view at least, one of the most slick solo entertainers in the North. I do hope this excellent and humorous singer manages to climb the career ladder yet further.

I hear that Alistair has recently become a dad and with parenthood comes new responsibilities, especially when you work in the unstable world of showbusiness. A local booking at Westgate Common Club this weekend will at least ensure that the affable Alistair doesn’t present his babysitter with a very late night.

Earlier this year I went out of town to Fitzwilliam in order to take a look at a new band called Rockwood.

The members of this band are hardly beginners, but these guys have taken a break from the band scene, having only recently formed to present their nostalgia-based covers show.

When the audience at Hemsworth miners social club in Fitzwilliam saw this band they were as impressed as I was. Crigglestone wmc has the chance to see Rockwood this weekend on Saturday’s Halloween night show and I predict a great night.

Local singer Harry Clark is a popular and generous man, who loves to adopt his Simply H guise and sing for his supper.

Harry appears locally this weekend when Lofthouse Gate wmc will be his port of call on Saturday night. Well done to concert secretary Jane Hooley for booking yet another local
favourite.

I have to admit to being a bit of a fan of local band Easy Action. These guys, from the South Elmsall area, have a local Saturday night gig this weekend, when they appear at the New Brookhouse Club. A band-style attraction that manages to involve the audience as Easy Action do are always going to be extremely popular in any club venue.

Well travelled and experienced duo Y’ Can’t Touch This make a rare local appearance this weekend when they take to the stage at Outwood wmc on Sunday evening. On paper at least, the Sunday night shows at Outwood look like the best night out and long may they
continue.

The audiences at Outwood are always a real tonic for any entertainer and I’m sure that this particular Sunday should prove to be yet another great night down Ledger Lane.

Finally for this week, the autumn showcase season is upon us and i shall be on my travels, on behalf of another publication, reviewing acts and bands up and down the country.

This is the time of year when entertainers fill their diaries with cruise and holiday centre work for the following year. Rest assured, I will include reports on all the local Clubland people out there looking for new opportunities in a future issue.
