Time to touch at Artwalk

EVER think some things look just too good to touch?

Well that sure is the case for an all new exhibition which is coming to town.

As Wakefield’s Artwalk returns to the city this week, people are invited to explore the tension between looking and touching at the opening night of Charlie Hurcombe’s sculptural installation Assemblage.

The Worcester artist’s work – which joins the Art House’s Some Times programme, utilises man-made materials, wood, reclaimed items and functional fixtures as sculptures – encouraging interaction.

But the temptation to touch the glossy, colourful and geometric exhibits, will be strictly refused in an aim to manipulate a combined tension of attracting and alerting the viewer.

Anne Cunningham, chief executive of The Art House, said: “Charlie’s work will be installed throughout the Art House. Audiences will find artworks presenting the complexities of both looking and touching.”

Mr Hurcombe is the second of four artists selected to participate in the Some Times national residency programme, which brings contemporary artists to work with audiences and communities in Wakefield, as part of the artists’ development.

The exhibition opening will coincide with Wednesday’s Artwalk which takes place 5pm-9pm. Charlie will be staging a talk at 7pm, with BSL interpretation, providing visitors with the opportunity to find out more about his work.

Charlie, who has exhibited works all across the UK, said: “I am looking forward to not only exhibiting my sculpture at the Art House but also having the opportunity to make new work during my studio residency, meet local artists and take part in the Wakefield Artwalk.

“As a sculptor it will be particulary interesting to be situated in Wakefield¹s enviable location with the Hepworth, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Henry Moore Institute all nearby.”

On top of the exhibition, this month’s Artwalk will include exhibitions at Chantry Chapel, the Orangery and The Hepworth Wakefield.
