BREAKING: Workers vote for managed closure of Kellingley Colliery

Miners at Kellingley Colliery have voted to accept a £20m package which would see a ‘managed closure’ of the pit over 18 months.

79.9 per cent of workers at the site voted to accept the deal which would see a £10m state loan, alongside £10m from the private sector, fund the closure of the pit, which employs 700 workers.

The deal would see gradual job losses over an 18 month period, with Kellingley and another pit at Thorseby in Notthinghamshire, closing by the end of December 2015.
