The supermarket chain is developing designs for a store located off Neil Fox Way, close to where the new Starbucks coffee shop is on Doncaster Road.

The scheme is subject to planning permission and although no detailed proposals have been released publicly yet, the Co-op says the venture would be "a major investment" in the area and create jobs.

The Co-op has however, applied to Wakefield Council for a licence to sell alcohol between 7am and 10pm seven days a week, suggesting these would be the store's opening hours.

A spokesperson for Central England Co-operative said: "Our proposals for a new convenience store in Doncaster Road, Wakefield, would represent a major investment by the society and provide local employment as well as a valuable retail resource for residents.

"Our plans would see the creation of a modern, environmentally friendly food store that would complement the character and heritage of the area.

"We are currently liaising with planning experts and officers from the local authority at every stage of developing this project and will ensure that we work together to provide a new store that would bring significant benefits to the local community, a convenient shopping experience and a fantastic range of products."

Members of the public have until January 18 to make any comments about the licensing application to Wakefield Council.
