It was all leading towards the weekend when pubs were hoping for a decent turnout to make up for the lost winter months.

Louise Waters, landlady at Harry's Bar in Wakefield city centre, said: "The first weekend went really well. It’s been a great start back - little bit rusty at the beginning of the week with staff and equipment and we ironed a few teething problems out but over all a steady week and decent weekend.

"It’s been loverly seeing the hustle and bustle and hearing the chatter and laughter. Everyone has behaved and enjoyed being back. let’s hope the weather stays kind to us!"

Sam Carney, landlady at the Travellers Inn at Stanley said: "The weekend was absolutely brilliant and it's good to be back. The police checked in with us too - all good.
