Mr Box, who is now the chairman of tourism body Welcome to Yorkshire, said measures were being put in place to boost the district's tourist attractions.

He said: He said: “Tourism has always had a big role to play in Wakefield’s economy.

“In terms of cities there has been a impression Welcome to Yorkshire is just about the countryside and the dales. That is not true, but there is a feeling cities have been overlooked. I am determined to make sure we focus on that as well as North Yorkshire.

“Things like the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Hepworth and Pontefract Castle, are wonderful things to see. We need to and we will have a far greater focus on the attractions in those areas – we know they have been badly hit.”
